Us

Alex's analysis: A smart, poignant horror that still delivers on scares
Alex's rating:
Us is one of those movies where it's best to go in knowing as little as possible and just enjoy the ride, but in short, it follows a woman - Adelaide Wilson - and her family as they are pursued by their doppelgangers. Directed by Jordan Peele of Get Out fame, Us is a surreal, strange film that's so much more than just a horror - Alex Choros
Director: Jordan Peele | Cast: Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Supernatural horror
Interview with the Vampire

Anula's notions: A deeply disturbing introspective that will have you checking the shadows for weeks to come.
Anula's rating:
Based on the gothic horror novel of the same name, a journalist gets the interview of several life times when he sits down with 200 year old vampire, Louis (Brad Pitt). A life story like no other, the film follows the folly of eternal life and servitude across multiple centuries.
Anne Rice's novel is up there with classic gothic literature like Frankenstein. Be prepared for the macabre tribulations of good vs. evil and justice vs. revenge - Anula Keenan
Director: Neil Jordan | Cast: Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Antonio Banderas, Kirsten Dunst, Christian Slater | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Gothic
Available on: Netflix
The Invitation

Alex's analysis: If you're after slow, menacing horror, put The Invitation on the top of your list.
Alex's rating:
We've all been to an awkward party, but The Invitation is the awkward dinner party to end all awkward dinner parties. Protagonist Will is invited to a soiree hosted by his ex-wife and her new partner at his old home, which is unpleasant enough. To make matters worse, it turns out the new couple is part of support group that sounds more than a little cult like and they're very keen on sharing the love. It's a tense, uncomfortable slow burn - Alex Choros
Director: Karyn Kusama | Cast: Logan Marshall-Green, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Aiden Lovekamp, Michelle Krusiec | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Suspenseful horror
Available on: Netflix | iTunes | Google Play
The Babysitter

Alex's analysis: You can call it a horror movie, but The Babysitter is more like a super gory coming of age comedy.
Alex's rating:
The Babysitter breathes new life into the "boy has a crush on his babysitter" trope with a healthy dose of ultra-violence. Mayhem ensues when awkward 12-year-old Cole discovers his charming babysitter Bee is part of a satanic murder cult. Cole accidentally witnesses some good old fashioned human sacrifice, turning a quite evening into a nightmare. Ooops.
Coming in at just over 80 minutes, The Babysitter never outstays its welcome, packed to the brim with fun set-pieces, grizzly deaths, and surprisingly enough, some touching moments. It never takes itself too seriously, and as long as you don't either, you'll have a good time - Alex Choros
Director: McG Cast: Samara Weaving, Hana Mae Lee, Judah Lewis, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Gory horror comedy
Available on: Netflix
Annihilation

Alex's analysis: A super smart horror, perhaps best described as Alien meets a bad trip.
Alex's rating:
After a small meteor collides with earth, a crack team of military scientists are tasked with investigating the quarantined impact site. As they explore "The Shimmer", the team encounter mutated wild life, twisted human remains, and find they can longer remember extended stretches of time. It only gets weirder from there. While Annihilation can be enjoyed purely as a sci-fi tinged horror, it also succeeds as a cerebral film: when it's not grossing you out with gore, Annihilation asks big questions about what it means to be human. It sure is a wild ride - Alex Choros
Director: Alex Garland | Cast: Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Psychedelic sci-fi horror
Available on: Netflix | Google Play
The Shining

Jacqui's gist: The classic tale of man meets haunted hotel, man goes crazy, man tries to kill family. Hey, it could happen to anyone.
Jacqui's rating:
There's a reason why The Shining still remains one of the most iconic horror movies of all time. Three reasons, actually: Jack Nicholson, Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King. Put them together and you get a slow burn, brooding masterpiece that's still genuinely creepy nearly forty years later. Jack Nicholson stars Jack Torrance, a struggling writer who moves his family to an isolated hotel for his job as the winter caretaker. It soon becomes clear that the hotel is evil and it's having a strange effect on Jack. The rest is pretty much history - Jacqui Dent
Director: Stanley Kubrick | Cast: Jack Nicholson, Shelly Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Haunted hotel horror

Cam

Alex's analysis: A more surreal, almost Lynchian take on the whole Black Mirror "what if technology, but too much" trope.
Alex's rating:
Alice - aka Lola_Lola - is a moderately successful camgirl (Google it, just not at work) who's looking to make the big leagues. But as she works her way up the "most watched" list, she finds herself locked out of her account, replaced by a digital double. Channelling the likes of Hitchcock and Lynch, Cam is nuanced and surprisingly tasteful for a movie that's ostensibly about taking your clothes off online, and explores themes that stretch far beyond what you might expect. Well worth the watch - Alex Choros
Director: Daniel Goldhaber | Cast: Madeline Brewer, Patch Darragh, Melora Walters, Devin Druid | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Tech-laced identity thriller

The Ritual

Tara's take: Enjoy camping (or Scandinavia)? You won’t after watching The Ritual.
Tara's rating:
Netflix’s original horror The Ritual sees four Brits decide to honour their late friend’s memory by hiking through the wilds of Sweden, only to find themselves lost, injured, and at each other’s throats after an ill-advised night in a seriously creepy abandoned cabin. But things go from bad to really bad when the group realises they are being quietly hunted by something unseen, unnatural and unrelenting. Although The Ritual employs plenty of horror tropes – you’ll feel a definite Blair Witch vibe throughout – it shines in its original creature design, strong cast, and ominous atmosphere - Tara Donnelly
Director: David Bruckner | Cast: Rage Spall, Arsher Ali, Robert James-Collier, Sam Troughton | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Supernatural creature feature
Available on: Netflix
Creep

Alex's analysis: An unnerving watch that that will make you want to delete Tinder, Uber, and Airtasker. The kind of stranger danger your mother warned you about.
Alex's rating:
Creep is a deeply unsettling psychological horror that eschews for the supernatural for stranger danger. The unique twist on the found footage genre sees cash-strapped camera guy Aaron answer an online job ad for Josef, a man who wants to make movie for his unborn child. Josef is weird enough at face value, but his behaviour becomes increasingly bizarre as the day goes on. Edge of your seat viewing - Alex Choros
Director: Patrick Brice | Cast: Mark Duplass, Patrick Brice | Language: English | Rating: M
Genre: Found footage thriller
Available on: Netflix | iTunes | Google Play
