What is Foxtel Now?
Foxtel Now is the pay TV giant's answer to Netflix. It's cheaper than a traditional Foxtel subscription, there are no contracts, installation fees or installation – all content is streamed online.
There's a lot to love about Foxtel Now. Accessing premium TV legally in Australia has never been this easy. The Foxtel Now library boasts loads of content you'll never find on Netflix – *cough* Game of Thrones, *cough* new release movies. And you can stream live TV which is a big draw card for sports fans.
But unlike Netflix or Stan, which provide access to their entire content library for a single monthly fee, Foxtel Now divides content into "packs". The packs give access to only a specific type of content like drama TV, or movies. Much like a traditional Foxtel subscription, you need to take up a base starter pack - worth $25 per month - after which you can add extras like sports and movies.
All the latest mobile and internet news and deals, delivered every Monday.
How much does Foxtel Now cost?
Depending on your interests, Foxtel Now could cost you anywhere between $25 and $109 per month. But every pack is commitment-free which means you can change how much you pay at any time, if you need to.
Content packs come in three types:
- Starter – can buy solo
- Premium – can only buy with a starter pack
- Exclusive – only available to customers subscribing to every single package
Because there is only one starter pack with a $25 asking price, if you have an interest in content on any other packs, the monthly asking price can spike pretty quickly. For example, if you want access to the drama pack, you'll end up paying $40 per month with the starter pack plus drama for an extra $15 on top.
For a lot of Foxtel Now packs, unfortunately, paying the full price is your only real option. But fortunately, that's no longer the case for the Sports pack. That's thanks to Kayo, Foxtel's dedicated sports streaming service. For a $25 monthly fee, Kayo will get you access to nearly all of Foxtel Now's sports content, without having to buy the Foxtel Now starter pack on top.

What to watch on Foxtel Now: Our editors' picks

There are so many movies and TV shows on Foxtel Now that at times it can be hard to decide what to watch! But don't worry, WhistleOut's got you covered.
Our editors watch way too much TV and have put together their top picks for movies and TV shows.
How do you watch Foxtel Now?

Brace yourself, because this is where it gets a little tricky. Foxtel recently moved to merge its Foxtel Now streaming support with Foxtel GO - that's the free streaming site built specially for traditional Foxtel customers.
Foxtel says it made the move to merge Foxtel Now and Foxtel GO to give Foxtel Now subscribers access to GO's superior features like the preview screen to watch trailers, an expanded Kids homepage and support for Android 10 and iOS 13. Foxtel Now subscribers can watch on Foxtel GO at no extra cost.
Foxtel Now subscribers can stream through Foxtel GO on:
- Safari and Chrome browsers by visiting https://watch.foxtel.com.au
- On Android devices via the Foxtel GO app
- On iPhone/iPad via the Foxtel GO app
- On Chromecast via the Foxtel GO app
- On Apple TV via Apple Airplay using the Foxtel GO app
However, if you're watching on a Telstra TV, a Play Station 4 or a Foxtel Now Box, you can continue to use the existing Foxtel Now app for these devices.
You can register up to five devices with your Foxtel Now/GO subscription and watch on up to two devices simultaneously. That means you could be in the lounge room bingeing Game of Thrones while the kids watch Beauty and the Beast upstairs.
There
are a couple of kinks with the Foxtel GO viewing experience. Unlike the Netflix
app for mobile and tablet, the Foxtel GO mobile and tablet app doesn't allow
you to download content for offline viewing. And unlike Netflix, Stan and
Amazon Prime Video, Foxtel GO doesn't offer Ultra HD 4K resolution content.
But this should only be noticeable if you're viewing on a very large screen.
Best streaming devices

With a streaming device you can do more than just watch Foxtel Now. You can catch up on ABC iView, watch free movies on SBS on Demand and even check out Netflix and Stan as well. Basically, a streaming device will turn your TV into a smart TV, with minimal hassle and expense!
In this guide, we looked at the best streaming devices for Netflix, but a lot of our favourites are great for Foxtel Now too. Check them out.

What are the alternatives to Foxtel Now?
The services most similar to Foxtel Now are Netflix, Stan and Amazon Prime. All three are subscription streaming services, and you pay a single fee to access the full content library. They're all cheaper than Foxtel Now but much of the content will be different.
Netflix is a popular choice in Australia and offers a vast array of content including plenty of movies, TV and an increasing array of exclusive Netflix Original TV shows. You won't find as many premium shows like Game of Thrones or new release movies as you will on Foxtel Now, but there's plenty of good stuff to keep you entertained.
Stan is a home-grown service offering a wide range of content, including originally-made TV shows and exclusive programming from the Showtime network. Price-wise, plans are on par with Netflix, starting from $10 per month.
Amazon Prime Video is still fairly new to the Aussie market, but prices start from a low $6.99 per month. The library is not as extensive as what you'll find on other services, but it does offer exclusive content such as American Gods and The Grand Tour.
How to choose: Streaming services compared

Trying to pick which streaming service you're going to get? Choosing between Netflix, Stan, Foxtel Now and Amazon Prime Video is not like choosing which car you want to buy, or choosing whether you want an iPhone or an Android. This is not a decision you are locked into and may end up regretting.
It’s much more like deciding what you'll have for dinner. In these guides, we compare the different services for price, content and more and look at the relatively low cost of getting them all.
