I, Tonya

Jacqui's gist: The Tonya Harding skating scandal is one of those stories that would be unbelievable if it weren't true.
Jacqui's rating:
In 1994 the American figure skater Tonya Harding's career ended in controversy when her ex-husband orchestrated an attack on her skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan. I, Tonya is the incredible true story of how that came to happen. Everything about this movie is surprising, from the humour to the heartbreak to the real details of the crime that shocked the world of sport. There was a lot of talk about this movie at Oscar time and it's easy to see why. I, Tonya is a movie that deserves all its hype - Jacqui Dent
Director: Craig Gillespie | Cast: Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney, Julianne Nicholson | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Stranger than fiction

Thor: Ragnarok

Jacqui's gist: Hands down the best and funniest Marvel movie to date.
Jacqui's rating:
Even if you're not a huge fan of Marvel movies, you need to check out Thor: Ragnarok for one simple reason - Taika Waititi. Yes, the Kiwi writer-director-actor-genius we all know and love from movies such as What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople has brought his directorial brains to this comic book adventure and it shows. Not just in the uniquely Kiwi sense of humour (which is laugh-out-loud funny), but in the casting (plenty of Aussie and NZ faces), the aesthetic (how many directors would make an alien planet look and sound like a 90s video game?) and even the names of the spaceships (they're all named after Holdens). On top of that, it's got all the action-packed spectacle we've come to expect from Marvel. A thoroughly good watch - Jacqui Dent
Director: Taika Waititi Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum | Language: English | Rating: M
Genre: Marvel

It

Jacqui's gist: The new adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel may be the most Stephen King thing you'll ever see.
Jacqui's rating:
What could be more Stephen King than a bunch of pre-teens riding their bikes around a small American town trying to solve a mystery? That same story, but with an evil clown that wants to scare them all to death. Literally.
The new adaptation of It is the perfect combination of 80s nostalgia and horror that you were looking for to get you through life until the next season of Stranger Things. It also happens to be brilliantly shot with an incredible cast of soon-to-be stars including Sophia Lillis (Sharp Objects) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) - Jacqui Dent
Director: Andy Muschietti Cast: Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, FinnWolfhard, Bill Skarsgård | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Classic Stephen King

Try "Scott Pilgrim vs the World" on Amazon Prime Video

Alex's analysis: A quirky action rom-com with endless amounts of visual flair.
Alex's rating:
Scott
Pilgrim vs the World is your typical romance story: boy meets girl, boy falls
in love, boy has to defeat girl's seven evil exes. What could be more
relatable? Based on the comics by Bryan Lee O'Malley and directed by Edgar Wright of Shaun of the Dead fame, Scott Pilgrim vs the World is a laugh-out-loud-funny visual extravaganza packed with geeky references. But for all the pomp, Scott
Pilgrim handles a simple theme well: everyone has baggage - Alex Choros
Dunkirk

Jacqui's gist: Light on the talk and heavy on the tension, Dunkirk will make you feel like you too are trapped on a beach, surrounded by Nazis.
Jacqui's rating:
If you have access to a fancy sound system I suggest you use it when you're watching Dunkirk. There's a reason the movie won two Oscars in the Best Sound category. It's the soundscape that brings this incredible true story to life, from the shockingly sudden action to the dreadful suspense of 400,000 World War 2 soldiers waiting exposed on a beach for a rescue mission that will be just as, if not more, dangerous. Dunkirk is a sparse and gripping snapshot of a desperate moment during the war - Jacqui Dent
Director: Christoper Nolan | Cast: Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Harry Styles, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy | Language: English | Rating: M
Genre: War movie

Baby Driver

Jacqui's gist: So much more than just an action movie, Baby Driver is a nearly two-hour long car chase / music video / action / comedy / piece of genius.
Jacqui's rating:
It's hard to know where to begin with Baby Driver. The whole thing is shot like a music video, complete with gun-shots, action and sometimes even dialogue that syncs with the music. It's full of fast-paced, car chasing heists and the action is really gosh darn cool. It's an Edgar Wright movie so it's got that stylised comic book feel and the dialogue is super slick. It's also really funny. The complete package, really, and a flawless piece of entertainment - Jacqui Dent
Director: Edgar Wright Cast: Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Action comedy gold

Army of Darkness

Tara's take: The ultimate horror-comedy cult classic. Shop smart, shop S-Mart!
Tara's rating:
If not for Sam Raimi’s iconic Evil Dead series, many horror comedy films may have never existed. Army of Darkness is the third film in the trilogy; bypassing the all-out violence of the original for ramped-up comedy and unforgettable one-liners, this cult classic sees demon-killing antihero Ash stranded in Medieval England, low on gas and surrounded by the dead - Tara Donnelly
Director: Sam Raimi | Cast: Bruce Campbell, Embeth Davidtz, Marcus Gilbert, Ian Abercrombie | Language: English | Rating: M
Genre: Cult classic horror comedy

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Jacqui's gist: Writer/director
Wes Anderson at his finest, a whimsical delight from start to finish.
Jacqui's rating:
The Grand Budapest Hotel is a comedy-drama about a flamboyant concierge falsely accused of murder. It's a thrilling adventure that manages to be both heart-breaking and hilarious. It's one of those rare movies that feels like a gift to its audience – every scene is a visual feast, every line of dialogue is funny and clever, every performance is stand-out. Watch it - Jacqui Dent

Genre: Wes Anderson movies

Coraline

Alex's analysis: Don't let the gorgeous stop motion animation fool you, Coraline is a twisted tale that will get under your skin.
Alex's rating:
Coraline is a beautifully animated stop motion horror based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name. It follows an adventurous young girl - the titular Coraline - who finds herself in a parallel world that quickly transitions from dream to nightmare. While you could technically call Coraline a kids movie, it's nonetheless wonderfully creepy. Think The Nightmare Before Christmas, but more sinister - Alex Choros
Director: Henry Selick | Cast: Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, John Hodgman, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French | Language: English | Rating: PG
Genre: Dark fantasy horror
Available on: Netflix | Foxtel Now | iTunes | Google Play
The Shining

Jacqui's gist: The classic tale of man meets haunted hotel, man goes crazy, man tries to kill family. Hey, it could happen to anyone.
Jacqui's rating:
There's a reason why The Shining still remains one of the most iconic horror movies of all time. Three reasons, actually: Jack Nicholson, Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King. Put them together and you get a slow burn, brooding masterpiece that's still genuinely creepy nearly forty years later. Jack Nicholson stars Jack Torrance, a struggling writer who moves his family to an isolated hotel for his job as the winter caretaker. It soon becomes clear that the hotel is evil and it's having a strange effect on Jack. The rest is pretty much history - Jacqui Dent
Director: Stanley Kubrick | Cast: Jack Nicholson, Shelly Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Haunted hotel horror
Available on: Netflix | Foxtel Now | iTunes | Google Play
Logan

Alex's analysis: Emotionally heavy superhero drama that is destined to make grown men cry.
Alex's rating:
It's hard enough to make a good superhero movie, let alone a serious one. Logan, however, manages to be both, and an excellent movie full stop. Part western, part noir, the film blends the kind of visceral action you'd expect from an adamantium-clawed protagonist with poignant drama that deconstructs the genre. While there's thrill to be found in Wolverine finally drawing blood, Logan's emotional core makes it so much more than your standard superhero popcorn flick - Alex Choros
Director: James Mangold Cast: Hugh Jackman, Dafne Keen, Patrick Stewart Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Action

Pan's Labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno)

Tara's take: A visually stunning dark fairytale, with a captivating cast and wonderful practical effects.
Tara's rating:
Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 fantasy is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking: set in 1944 in post-Civil War Spain, the film follows the young Ofelia, forced into a new life with a brutal stepfather and a pregnant mother. After a midnight encounter with a faun in a nearby labyrinth, Ofelia is given three potentially-deadly tasks that she must complete in order to reclaim her title as princess of a magical otherworld. Despite a storyline involving magic, monsters and monarchies, Pan's Labyrinth is definitely not one for kids; it’s eerie, often violent, and occasionally terrifying. But it’s also undeniably gorgeous to watch, with a stellar performance from Ivana Baquero as the young heroine Ofelia - Tara Donnelly
Director: Guillermo del Toro | Cast: Ivana Baquero, Sergi Lopez, Doug Jones | Language: Spanish with English subtitles | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Dark fantasy

Captain Fantastic

Jacqui's gist: It looks like a quirky comedy, but Captain Fantastic is actually a surprisingly moving drama about the pros and cons of leading an uncompromising life.
Jacqui's rating:
Viggo Mortensen is Ben Cash - the stereotypical crazy hippie who raises his family in the woods away from the toxic influence of modern capitalism. His children learn to hunt, rock-climb, debate political theory and celebrate Noam Chomsky's birthday instead of Christmas. But when the family is forced to venture back into society Ben's children start to question their isolated way of life. Captain Fantastic is nuanced and complicated, sweet and funny, heart-breaking and serious - Jacqui Dent
Director: Matt Ross Cast: Viggo Mortensen, George MacKay, Samantha Isler, Annalise Basso, Nicholas Hamilton Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Quirky drama

La La Land

Jacqui's gist: If you like romance or musicals, you'll likely like La La Land.
Jacqui's rating:
La La Land is a movie that harks back to the golden days of Hollywood. It's jazzy, it's swell. It's about a guy and a girl. They don't get on, and then they do ... you get the picture. This is a really nice romance. And a love song to LA, city of dreamers where the starry-eyed go to make it big. It's got a beautiful, strangely haunting soundtrack and is generally a lovely way to spend a Saturday night - Jacqui Dent
Director: Damien Shazelle | Cast: Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Rose Marie DeWitt Language: English | Rating: M
Genre: Good old-fashioned musical romance
Available on: Foxtel Now | Google Play | iTunes
Inherent Vice

Jacqui's gist: The film noir detective is reborn as a hapless hippie in this strange and brooding dark comedy.
Jacqui's rating:
You kind of have to see it to believe it: Joachim Phoenix plays a stoner private detective in 1970s LA and my god, he pulls it off, delivering a performance of subtle comic genius that never takes away from the darkness at the heart of the movie. This film is like a trip: surreal, absurd, funny, paranoid and laced with creeping existential dread. It's a classic film noir that also manages to be startlingly original - Jacqui Dent
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterson Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Hippie noir
Available on: Foxtel Now | Google Play | iTunes
Zombieland

Jacqui's gist: Do they take the zombie apocalypse seriously? Not really. Do they kick undead arse? Hell yes, they do.
Jacqui's rating:
What would happen if Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin were the last survivors of the zombie apocalypse? The answer is Zombieland.
This is the story of an unlikely band of misfits driving across America killing zombies and looking for twinkies. They smash up a gift shop, argue over the best Zombie Kill of the Week and meet Bill Murray, who plays himself in one of film history's greatest cameos. The movie also provides plenty of useful tips on how to survive the zombie apocalypse. Educational and hilarious. Who could ask for more? - Jacqui Dent
Director: Ruben Fleischer | Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Bill Murray | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Zombie comedy

Aladdin

Tara's take: One of Disney's finest musicals, Aladdin will enchant viewers of all ages.
Tara's rating:
Genuflect, show some respect and get down on one knee for one of the most beloved films in Disney's 80s-90s renaissance. Self-described 'street rat' Aladdin teams up with a wise-cracking genie (brilliantly voiced by the late Robin Williams) to win the heart of the Sultan's daughter and defeat the villainous Jafar. Over twenty-five years since its release, Aladdin holds up as one of Disney's best, with a catchy and romantic soundtrack, snappy dialogue and a scene-stealing sidekick in the wonderful Genie - Tara Donnelly
Directors: Ron Clements, John Musker | Cast: Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin | Language: English | Rating: G
Genre: Animated musical
