More About Optus

Why choose Optus for NBN?

Optus is Australia's second largest telco and a trusted name in Australian internet. In recent years, Optus has put a large emphasis on "content", and snapped up the rights to the English Premier League and other sporting events. While the telco still offers basic broadband packages, Entertainment bundles are now Optus' biggest point of difference in an increasingly crowded NBN market.

Optus' flagship NBN plan includes Optus Sport and Fetch TV subscriptions.

Optus Sport is an Optus streaming service specialising in sports. It includes the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

Fetch TV is a premium television service that essential competes with Foxtel. Much like Foxtel, you have the option of picking from packs that give you access to select channels. On the Optus top plan, you'll get a Fetch TV Mighty set-top box and one Premium channel pack. Additional channel packs can be added for $6 per month, or you can grab all of them for an extra $14 per month.

Fetch TV's Premium channel packs are as follows:

  • Kids: The Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Nickelodeon, Nick Junior, Cartoon Network, Disney XD, Cbeebies, Zoo Moo, Baby TV
  • Knowledge: National Geographic, Nat Geo People, Nat Geo Wild, BBC Knowledge, HGTV, Food Network, Travel Channel, BBC World News, CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg, France 24, Aljazeera, EuroNews, Channel NewsAsia, NDTV 24x7, CGTN
  • Vibe: E!, Style, Fashion TV, Comedy Central, Spike, Egg Network, MTV, MTV Dance, MTV Music, ESPN, ESPN 2, Edge
  • Variety: Universal Channel, 13th Street, SyFy, BBC First, BBC UKTV, TV Hits, 111 Funny, MTV Classic, Music TV

If your home isn't currently connected to the NBN, Optus can connect you with an ADSL2+ or cable internet service and then switch you to an NBN plan whenever your home becomes NBN ready. Optus' entertainment offerings are also available on ADSL2+ and cable connections.

Optus NBN Plans

Optus has two main NBN plans. Both plans include unlimited data, and Standard Plus Evening Speed (configured on NBN 50).

Optus’ basic plan is just internet, while its top-end option also includes entertainment. It is configured on NBN 50 (40Mbps typical evening speed) and if you want faster speeds you can upgrade to NBN 100 (80Mbps typical evening speed) for additional $30/mth. You also get a Fetch TV set-top box with one premium channel pack subscription, and an Optus Sport subscription.

Optus NBN plans are available on a 24-month contract or on a month-to-month basis. You'll pay $200 in upfront costs if you want to go the month-to-month option. If you choose a 24-month contract, you'll pay only in upfront set-up fees $99.

How to switch to Optus NBN

To find out if you're eligible for an Optus NBN plan, first check your address in our broadband search engine. If Optus is listed in the search results, congratulations: you're able to make the switch.

Once you've picked the plan that works best for you and your family, you can place an order directly with Optus by phone, in-store, or online. Optus will help you to organise an installation date and time, plus take care of transferring any current broadband plan you may have over to their own NBN service.

Optus will provide you with an NBN-ready modem as part of your plan.

Another important thing to note: while installation is free for most customers (excluding the upfront costs you'll pay on a month-to-month plan), if you're located in a newly developed area with no existing telecommunications infrastructure, you may be charged a $300 New Development Fee by NBN Co.
